What are the Uses of comma?

Commas are used to separate a sentence’s elements, to connect independent clauses, to avoid confusion, and much more. Here, we offer a brief, basic guide to using commas correctly. Also a comma Marks  a slight break between different part of a sentence.

To separate items in a list

When we mention more than two things then for the separation we use comma.

  • I have pens, notebooks, books. Many pencils, ruler and water bottle in my bag.
  • I like to eat chocolates, ice-creams, biscuits and many lollipops.

In Direct speech

It is the sentence that we speak without any changes as the speaker said.

But according to sentence, It is important to use comma before first or second quotation mark.

  • She said,’’I will cook food for you’’.
  • ‘’I will cook food for you,’’ said she.

Exception : when direct speech ended with  Question mark or exclamation mark then we do not use Comma after second quotation mark.

  • ‘’ When will you cook?” She said.
  • ‘’ Did you eat your food?’’ asked my mother.

To separate clauses

in complex sentences we need pause between two clauses.

  • After finishing work, we went back to home.
  • When teacher came in the classroom, students went out.

While using WHICH and WHO

we use WHICH and WHO only  for extra information (the sentence remains same when we remove them )

  • That man, Who is a doctor, is my father.
  • He brushes his teeth, which is a good habit.

For Parenthetical expressions

A parenthetical expression is an expression which is inserted into the flow of thought of the speaker to show emotions.

Ex- of course, for instance, in fact, however, etc.

we use comma to incorporate these kinds of expressions in the sentences.

  • My sister, as you know, is studying in 10th
  • We are, however, not going to play football.

To separate Question tags

We always write Question tags or tail questions at the end of the sentence. These are mostly   of informal nature.

For Example – Isn’t it, doesn’t it, right, Can’t you, Won’t you, etc.

  • You are an amazing painter, aren’t you?
  • It was a nice song, wasn’t it?

Some more uses:-

In place of omitted words

She is a teacher, her sister is a writer, a painter, a dancer.
